My beloved Casio watch died shortly before Christmas 2019 after a long and happy life of around eight years. After several new batteries and repairs it really had come to the end of its usability. When my partner asked me what I would like for Christmas, I set him the challenge finding a brightly coloured eco-friendly watch. I am pleased to report that he very much fulfilled his challenge.

So, on Christmas morning I was incredibly happy to unwrap my brand-new watch! Look at how beautiful it is…..

This watch is made by a British company named Ksana. When the founder of Ksana, Claire struggled to find a neon coloured, well-designed watch she set out to create her dream watch and the company was born. Not only is the company focused on design, it is also embedding sustainability into its processes wherever possible.

Firstly, Ksana is registered with the 1% for the planet initiative which means that each time that a watch is purchased, 1% of the sale value is donated to help environmental causes.

The watch arrived in entirely recyclable packaging which is so well designed that the consumer is actually encouraged to reuse the box. I might use mine to store my growing collection of pin badges!

The sustainability considerations do not stop at the design stage. When a Ksana watch eventually comes to end of its useful life, the watch can be sent back to the company so that they can fully recycle it. The silicone straps are repurposed into weatherproof coatings for solar panels, whilst the metal components such as the dials are used again in new watches or go into making jewellery or art pieces.

This is a perfect example of a company who have integrated sustainability into each element of their business, proving that you can have beautifully designed products that have a low impact on the environment. It is so refreshing to find a company that accepts the responsibility for their products right from the point of design to the point of disposal.

Here’s to many happy years with my new watch!
